To protect fragile lagoon ecosystems, Kerala’s Coastal Restoration Program has piloted floating rafts made of bamboo and biodegradable coir rolls planted with mangrove saplings in lagoons near Alappuzha. Each platform supports over 100 saplings and reduces coastal erosion as roots bind sediment. After a year, 85 percent of saplings survived. Local boatmen maintain platforms as part of livelihood diversification. Ecologists report improved water clarity and juvenile fish colonization. Kerala plans to expand platforms to Vembanad and Ashtamudi backwaters, combining restoration, livelihood, and climate resilience.
